N4D @ N4G:  EPISODE 1

Brieuc Pont
Rebranding nutrition on the climb to the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit

“Nutrition has a branding issue – it’s about so much more than nutrition – I’d rather call it ‘superdevelopment’, the art of bringing together different areas of expertise for a tailor made policy for a given problem in a given context.”

Listen to fascinating ‘behind-the-scene’ insights from Brieuc Pont, Special Envoy on Nutrition and Secretary General of the N4G Summit to be held on 28-29 March in Paris, France

Career diplomat and Secretary General of the N4G Summit Brieuc Pont shares his challenging journey to ‘peak summit’, in this latest podcast in our “More – and better – financing for nutrition” series. How has he been making the case for ambitious policy and financial commitments and action from political leaders ahead of N4G 2025?

 “Diplomats act as bridge-builders – we need to understand the technicalities of a particular issue after discussions with experts, then package this as a political process and bring it to a decision-making level”.

N4D’s directors ask Brieuc about:
  • his hopes and expectations for the summit;
  • the positive experiences and challenges he has experienced in the summit build-up;
  • which arguments have worked in convincing decision-makers to prioritise nutrition investment in such challenging times;
  • what are the financing alternatives in the light of USAID’s suspended budgets;
  • and how the sector can keep momentum going in between summits?
Tune in to hear Brieuc’s views on what the nutrition sector needs to do to improve its “branding” – as the most cost-effective development policy, with the highest return of $23 for every $1 invested. Adapting to new realities at a time when many high income countries are reducing aid means mobilising new investment partners – including development banks, such as the Asian Development Bank that pledged US$3 billion at COP26.
“We need to push for integrating nutrition at the highest political level among national institutions. N4G 2025 is an opportunity for raising the profile of nutrition among politicians and for transforming the way we ‘do’ development.”

Tune in to hear some answers in this important discussion, in preparation for the Nutrition for Growth summit in Paris

OUR GUEST

Brieuc is France’s special envoy on nutrition and secretary-general of the Nutrition for Growth Summit. He previously served as France’s ambassador to Nicaragua 2020-2023 and consul general in Sao Paulo 2016-2020.

He is a graduate of the Bordeaux Institute of Political Studies. He holds a post-graduate diploma in Political Communication from the University of Paris.

N4D @ Nutrition for Growth

N4G commitments are pledges made by governments, businesses, and civil society organisations to improve nutrition worldwide, particularly for vulnerable populations including children and women. In 2021, the N4G Tokyo Summit mobilized over $27 billion through 396 registered commitments from 181 stakeholders across 78 countries.

Nutrition for Growth Paris will be a multi-stakeholder summit, advocating for ambitious financial and political commitments and fostering dialogue among diverse actors from around the world, including governments, international organisations, research institutions, civil society organisations, philanthropies, the private sector and more.

N4D will be very active in the build-up to and during the week of the Summit, which includes pre-Summit events on 24-25 March. Our main aim is to help government and civil society partners from countries most affected by malnutrition to share their successes, challenges and commitments. We also aim to support country partners to stimulate discussion and decisions on how international actors can better support countries to address their priority financial, advocacy and technical support needs.

KEY AIMS OF THE NUTRITION FOR GROWTH SUMMIT 2025
Hosted by the Government of France, the N4G Paris 2025 aims to:
  • Put nutrition at the centre of the sustainable development agenda
  • Make the fight against all forms of malnutrition a universal cause
  • Create continuity between N4G summits and in the commitments for good nutrition
  • Mobilize ambitious new political and financial commitments for nutrition

In the buildup to the N4G Summit, we have been releasing a series of podcast conversations on the theme of ´More and better financing for nutrition´. This popular series has featured participants with very different perspectives, from Felix Phiri’s country 20+ years’ experience in managing budgets in Malawi at the heart of government efforts on nutrition, to insights at a global level from Meera Shekar, main author of the World Bank Nutrition Investment Framework, into how countries and global structures can better advocate for funding nutrition. A podcast with Greg S. Garrett provides a unique viewpoint on private sector finance from his role as Executive Director of Access to Nutrition initiative (ATNI), a ‘not-for-profit’ organization.
